Internet Policy
Answer
The Library will endeavour to provide internet access to the public. The internet, as an information resource, enables the Library to provide information beyond the limits of its own collection. Recognizing that the internet offers unrestricted and unlimited access to information, the Library makes no attempt to monitor, control or restrict the content and type of material available therein.
The internet is largely an unregulated medium and there is little international, federal, provincial or municipal control on its’ users or content. While it offers a wealth of information that is personally, professionally and culturally enriching, it also enables access to some material that may be offensive, disturbing or illegal. The Library will not be held responsible for content of web sites accessed by the public.
The internet provided to the Library is equally available to all Library patrons and the public. Access will be made on a first come, first served appointment basis, with a time limit of ½ hour per person. Not all internet information sources provide accurate, complete or current information. Patrons need to be careful and question the validity of the information received.
Library staff cannot provide in-depth training on the internet, computer hardware or software use or computer jargon. Nothing is to be saved on the public computer. Anything that is saved will automatically be deleted.
The Library reserves the right to restrict access to our computer equipment. Children under 12 years of age may only use the computer if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children 12 to 18 years of age must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian before access to the computer will be granted. Individuals using the computer to access obscene materials may be asked to stop using the equipment.
The Library will not allow external devises, disks, drives or ports to be connected to the public access computers.
Use of the public access computers is at the sole risk of the patron. The Library will not be responsible for damage, or liability that may occur from a patron’s use of the computer, a computer virus, infection or otherwise.
The Library reserves the right to restrict access to our computer equipment due to extraordinary events. Enhanced cleaning procedures and personal distancing measures may also restrict access.
