Guidelines and Procedures:


1. Collection Development
• Maintaining the collection by running regular status reports, doing regular inventory,
weeding and processing donations from the community.
• Researching and ordering all library materials including reference and periodicals
including correlating book orders to patron requests.
• Ensuring the collection is maintained in good repair and order through use of staff and
volunteers.
2. Programs and Patron Services
• To assist patrons in locating and using library materials and services including interlibrary
loans
• To carry out circulation services to the patrons: checking books in and out of the
library, levying overdue book fines accordingly, re-shelving books and keeping shelves
clean and tidy.
• Making every effort to recover lost books and out standing fines.
• Maintaining a patron database as well as records of all library activities both statistical
and descriptive.
• Troubleshooting public access computers as well as monitoring their use. Offering
assistance to non-computer users with setting up email accounts, internet searching
techniques, applying for jobs on-line, word processing assistance and accessing
government programs/information via the internet.
• Proctoring post secondary education institute exams.
• Maintaining the library website.
• Creating posters and brochures to educate the public on
library services and collection.
• Creating and manning information displays at trade fairs and community events.
• Maintaining partnership with SALC to help connect with potential users as well as
offering space and resources in the library to help facilitate their programs.
• Printing, faxing, photocopying and laminating services.
• Information and referral services.

3. Administration and Supervision
• Attending all regular Board meetings and other sub-committee meetings as required
(e.g. Policy Committee, Finance Committee, Building Committee).
• Having knowledge of provincial and local library legislations and helping to create
and implement proper policies and procedures in accordance with such legislations.
• With the Finance Committee, researching grants and funding opportunities and, with
approval, applying for any that are appropriate. Staying alert to other opportunities for
alternate sources of funding.
• Creating monthly reports on all aspects of library operations and programs for the
Library Board and the Friends of the Library.
• Representing the library at the regularly scheduled meetings of the following groups:
Friends of the Library, Sturgeon Libraries, Sturgeon Adult Leaming Council, and
when possible NLLS Library Managers Council.
• Submitting all necessary documents to NLLS and the Public Library Service Branch.
• Coordinating all library records as they pertain to Policy 403 - Records Retention and
Disposition.
• To prepare the annual report and survey, with input from the town. Also assist the
Board in preparing the annual budget.
• To consult with the Board on instances of out of the ordinary expenditures.
• Processing accounts payable and receivable and balancing library cash flow.
• Processing staff time sheets and keeping current records of staff appraisals.
• Developing and maintaining a volunteer program.
• Training, supervising and evaluating all staff, volunteers and summer students as well
as keeping up to date on all new procedures.
• Maintaining a regular program of professional development when budget allows.
