Canva - How do I customize templates?
Answer
Canva resources will be shared in one of two ways:
- As a view only link
- If they are shared as view only, simple select “File” in the upper left corner and “Make a Copy” to edit your own version.
- As a template link
- If they are shared as a template link, you can edit them directly without having to make a copy. This will not edit the original document.
Each Canva resource will require different edits, but here is a simple guide to the common ones you’ll need to make.
Library Logo
Many of our templates include a fake library logo to demonstrate where you might put your own library’s logo. It looks like this:
To replace it, click the “uploads” section of the left side menu, and click “Upload files”
Upload your library’s logo and select it from the menu to upload it to the template. You can now delete the sample logo and replace it with your library’s logo.
Library name (and other text)
You will often have to edit text when customizing your template, this most commonly entails changing the library sample name (Townsville Public Library), to your own. However, you should make sure to proofread the resource to make sure nothing else needs to be customized.
Edit text by simply double clicking on the text box you wish to edit, and typing your desired text.
Optional Edits
Canva makes it easy to edit the colour pallets and fonts of any design. There are several ways you can do this.
Brand Colours/ Fonts
You can save color pallets, fonts, and logos in the Brand section located on in the left menu bar. This allows you to maintain the same colors and fonts across all your designs. Simply click the “edit” buttons located in the right upper corner of each section.
To edit a document with each, you can hover over the color palette and click to apply it, or click on each font to add a text box.
Canva Styles
You can also experiment with Canva color pallets and fonts, which are in the Design section of the left side menu under “Styles”.
Here you can choose whether to edit color, font, or both together. Simply click on the one you want to try, and it will apply it to the rest of your design.
(You can also see your brand colors and fonts under this tab)
Individual colors/ fonts
If you don’t wish to edit an entire document, colors and fonts of individual elements can be edited by simply clicking on the desired element and using the options provided in the drop down menu.
