My library hours have changed, what do I do?

OR: What do I do when my library is going to close on a day it is normally open?

Answer

When your hours change, there's several places they get changed, and who does it depends on which place it is.
1) Talk to your board and find out if they need to change your policies to accommodate the closure.
2) If they do, make sure the policy has been passed at a board meeting.
3) Send an email to ask@nlls.ab.ca and let NLLS know how your hours will be changing - days closed, different daily hours, etc.
4) Change your library website's hours to match: How to Change Your Hours (and Other Home Page Details)
5) Change your Facebook and other social media hours to match: Add or change business hours on your Facebook Page
6) Change hours on any physical media you use for advertising: newsletters, brochures, posters, etc. A big hours change will require you to re-print everything you hand out.
7) Contact any outside organizations where the library hours may be listed - e.g. a town or county newsletter or website - and let them know about the change.

Library board changes:

  • Policy

The first thing to know about library hours is that they are included in the policies required by legislation - so your board will need to be involved to make that change to your library's policies.

NLLS changes:

  • Polaris
    • Affects when holds get requested from your library, as well as fines if you have them
    • TRACPAC website
    • TRACPAC app
  • Google Business (unless your library runs your Google Business yourself)
  • Van run (optional) - if your new hours conflict with your van run timeslot, we will need to know so we can make arrangements.

To get NLLS to change your hours in Polaris and Google, send an email to ask@nlls.ab.ca with the new hours.
