How do I place holds from the public side of Relais?

My patrons need support placing holds on items in Relais. How can I help them?

Answer

Start by going to https://alberta.relaisd2d.com/custom/alberta/site/login.html

1. From the list, select Northern Lights Library System. Choosing another system or library will prevent you from placing hold.

2. The default, Simple Search, is a simple keyword search. This is similar to a simple search in TRACpac. A user can enter in a title, author, keyword or subject, and bring up results from every public library in the province.

3. You will also notice in the top left corner, an Advanced Search option, as well as a sign in option.

4. Users can sign in immediately or wait until they are ready to place a specific request. It is personal preference; functionality is not affected by whether a patron is signed in. Once a patron is signed in, they should be able to see a list of their requested items.

NOTE: Upon sign-in, Relais validates the user by looking at NLLS patron records. If a patron is not in good standing, they will not be able to place a hold through Relais.

5. The advanced search screen is also similar to the TRACpac advanced search. To toggle back and forth between Advanced and Simple searches, click the “Simple Search” or “Advanced Search” link in the top right corner.

6. Search results are returned in the middle of the page. Icons show the format of the item on the right, and ways to refine the search show on the left. Searches can be refined by Date, Format, Author or Subject.

NOTE: The process of refining a search using either “Author” or “Subject” cannot be undone. In order to see the complete list of results again, the search must be restarted from the beginning.

7. To select an item to request, click on the desired title (in blue) and the display expands.

Note: To collapse the expanded view, re-click the title (in blue). Do not click the internet browser “back” button or you will be taken to the landing page and have to rebuild your search.

8. Select the pickup location in the expanded display. Since the user has already chosen Northern Lights as their library system, only Northern Lights libraries will show up in this drop-down menu.

9. If the patron wants a part of a multi-volume set, that shares a single record (eg. A two-volume local history title), and they know which volume is needed, enter that in the Volumes Needed box. Any other notes are entered in the Notes box.

10. Click the box acknowledging that you accept the institutions conditions. Click Request. This will send your request to be processed by the owning library.
