What do I do with this patron who moved from another library/regional system?
I have a patron who has moved to our town from a YRL library. I can't edit the account, so I can't put in their new address or change their home library to our library. What do I do?
Answer
The best thing to do is actually pretty much this - send NLLS a helpdesk ticket to ask us to change it over for you.
There are two ways to do this:
If you want to keep their current cards, you can send us a helpdesk ticket with their names and barcodes and just ask us to change the patron's account over to your branch. Then we put a popup note on the account to flag it for the next time they come in, so you can change their addresses to the new one.
The other option is to give them all-new cards with their new addresses and information (or have them do it themselves online, if your library has that option) and send us a helpdesk ticket asking us to merge their old and new accounts. If you can include their names and both old and new barcodes in the ticket, that's best.
It doesn't matter to us on our end which you choose, it's just whichever goes best with your workflow. Having us change the branch is quicker upfront, but it does mean you need to remember to go back in and update their address, etc. later, since you can't edit the account until after it's been changed over. Creating new accounts and having us merge old and new is more work upfront, but then you can forget about it after you've sent us the merge request ticket.
